Discovered Attack (Beginner)

Isakov - Nyikitin

Black to Move

1...Qd3+! Black Queen threatens capture of White's Rook at b1 if White's King moves to e1, forcing Black Queen sacrifice saving Black's Bishop at d7
2.Kxd3 Bxc6+ discovered attack/check (Black Bishop attacks White's Queen while Black Rook checks White's King) so Queen sacrifice gets White's Queen and a Bishop for the Black Queen, with the added thrust of Black going from material disadvantage to material advantage along with now having a Bishop Pair and pawn up to a Bishop and a Knight with pawn down - a very effective discovered attack/check!

White to Move

1.Rc7!! threatening Rook takes Black's Queen which is absolutely pinned (note that White's Queen is unguarded and thus White forces a sacrifice of the White Queen)
1...Qxh5
[1...Rg7?? 2.Re7+ Black Queen is pinned!
2...Kf8 3.Rxf7+ double check!
3...Ke8
(3...Kg8 4.Rf8#)
4.Rxg7+ Nf7 5.Qxf7+ Kd8 6.Qd7#]
2.Re7+ Rook goes into "hog" or "pig" attack mode gobbling up Black pieces, aided by discovered checks and back rank weakness. This effects the "windmill" - discovered checks followed by normal checks followed by more discovered checks.
2...Kf8 3.Rxb7+ Ke8 4.Re7+ Kf8 5.Rxh7+ Ke8 6.Rxh5

White to Move

This is an example of applying Queen sacrifice to force a discovered check with following mate in a line made famous by Paul Morphy's Opera Game at the Paris Opera House in 1858 (available for review in a later tutorial).
1.Qd8+!! the Queen sacrifice starts the parade...Black's back rank weakness forces Black's King to capture White's Queen setting up the unstoppable discovered attack/check mating pattern and mating net. Morphy's mating line is a very artful example of the deadly consequences of not paying attention to King Safety and early castling.
1...Kxd8 2.Bg5+ Ke8 3.Rd8#
