Suffocation Mate
empty This is a Bishop-Knight combination mate. The classic mating pattern involves a White Knight mating from f7 or h6, with opposing Black King entombed at g8 by own pieces and pawns blocked in from moving to g7 or h8 by White's Queen Bishop controlling the a1-h8 long diagonal. As with most mates where the opposing King is trapped into a corner area on the board, a suffocation mate may be applied against White as well along White's back rank and while very unusual it may be applied against White or Black to the Queenside of the board.
